I was reading a great article last night on names and the influence they can have on our lives.
This article was taking the angle of names getting weirder and wackier in an effort to differentiate kids from the pack.
The analogy used in this was to picture your child, let's call her Peaches Johnson at their first job interview!
Whether we admit it or not there will be judgment made well before entering the interview, that's if they get that far!
I actually have a close female friend named Samantha. She is just Sam to us and that is the way it was intended.
Her father openly states that in a male dominated corporate world, particularly when she was born in the early Eighties he wanted his daughter, his little Sam to have an equal opportunity of getting her foot in the door.
Now I don't want to quash originality and free expression, in fact I love many kids names that we come across at Gecko that I've never heard before but it just works.
These kids often have the spunk and personality that makes you think the name picked them rather than the other way around.
There is a little boy called Bear and his brother Harper and two more kindred spirited champion kids you will not meet.
So I'm going to sit on the fence with this one as I really believe it is a case by case call. Maybe that's easy to say when your name is Samuel James Wood?!
But all of you Mums out there. Why that name, what's your favourite and what are some that you just can't handle?
